Nineteen Ancient Poems

1

相去万余里,各在天一涯;
相去日已远,衣带日已缓;

So on, so on – from thee one parts in grief
A thousand miles away, at end of the sea
The roads are rough, ways long; and how we'll meet
The steed in the wind; the nest of birds in tree

The belt each day apart has grown its span
Floating clouds hide sun; roamer ne’er began
To yearn for thee makes old; years lost their plan
Let all be; say no more; be a good man

2

The riverside grass green, the willows row –
The tower's girl stands bright at window’s glow.
Her rouge and powder fine, her hand’s pale show –
Once of a singing maid, now roamer’s wife in woe.
No roamer back – one lies in bed with sorrow.

3

Green cedars crown the mound’s high height
In stream’s deep gorge pile crags of might
Man breathes beneath heaven’s boundless light
Like passing guest of hasty flight
A cup of wine makes hearts delight
Kind warmth prevails o’er slight unright
We drive slow steeds where paths invite
To roam Wan’s bounds and Luo’s fair site
How dense and dim Luo’s towns excite
Gowned lords seek kin in courtly rite
Broad streets with narrow lanes unite
Princes’ mansions grace every height
Two palaces gaze far in sight
Twin towers rise a hundred height
Full feast can calm the mind’s affright
Why let sad care press day and night

4

A noble feast now meets our cheerful friend
Our mortal life is light as wind-borne sand
The zither stirs rare strains that touch the grand
Heed well the lay, and grasp its honest stand
Our hearts accord, unvoiced hopes still expand
Our days on earth drift like a flying sand
Bestride strong steed to seize the vital land
Scorn humble want, and grief’s enduring brand

5

Northwest a lofty tower stands upright.
Its top is level with the clouds in flight.
Carved windows cross, a lattice fine to see;
Three steps ascend the hall where music breathes free.
From up there comes a zither’s trembling sound –
How sorrowful its tune, how profound!
Who could have made this song of grief and pain?
None but the wife of Qi, left in vain.
The clear pure mode drifts on the wind’s own way;
The middle strain then hesitates, won’t stay.
Each pluck brings three long sighs that rise and fall –
A boundless grief surrenders all.
One does not grudge the singer’s bitter art;
One grieves that knowing ears are far apart.
O may two swans together wing the sky –
Lift their strong feathers, mount and fly!

6

I cross the river, pick the lotus bloom.
The orchids on the marsh are fragrant now.
Who is the one to whom these flowers go?
My love is on a distant mountain’s brow.

I gaze behind to view my land of home.
The long road stretches endlessly – and how
Two hearts are one, yet forced to live apart.
This grief will last until my final vow.

7

The bright moon shines; east crickets chirp by me.
The Handle points to winter – stars how stir.
The white dew wets the grass; times clearly see.
The seasons shift – now autumn rings the key.
Mid branches cry the cicadas – for her.
The dark swallows have gone – no trace to near.
Old friends once raised strong wings – they could not bear.
No stone is firm; vain fame, what does it clear?

8

The lone bamboo takes root on mountain lay
Our new-wed bond like dodder clings to spray
Love blooms in hour, and wedlock finds its way
Wedded afar, o’er sloped hills far astray
Long pining wears my years; your chariot stays
Sweet orchid breathes, unfurling bright display
Unplucked in prime, it fades with autumn hay
If you hold faith, what grief need I obey

9

In courtyard grows a tree with blooms with glee
One breaks a flower and sends it far to sea
The scent fills sleeves, along with road and free
Not the gift is prized - long parting make it be

10

Far Altair glows, bright shines the River maiden due
With slender hands stretched, to play the weaving slew
No pattern forms all day the tears fall like dew
The stream runs clear and shallow—how far the severance knew
The gaze across the stream yet breathe no adieu

11

The turning cart goes far on roads to plough
Four sides are vast; east wind shakes every bough
All wonted shapes depart—how not grow old
Each rise and fall hath hour; stand firm not slow
Flesh not hard stone, nor length of days bestow
Life melts away; hold noble fame as bode

12

The east wall towers high, in winding sweep endue
Sharp winds rise forth; autumn grass turns lush hue
The four seasons shift; the year doth fly subdue
Morn winds vex the heart, crickets grieve and restrain due
Unbind the soul; why bind the spirit to pursue
Yan–Zhao breeds fair maids whose face is pale virtue
In silken robes they stand, and play soft lay cadence true
The strain breathes deep regret; swift strings their pace construe
Heart strays, gown adjusted, lingering steps eschew
As paired winged swallows, we’ll nest beneath thy view

13

One rides abroad and gaze on northern knoll
White aspens sigh, firs flank the open roll
The long-departed sink in twilight’s dole
They sleep below, nor wake from time’s vast stole
Time ebbs and flows; life melts like morning mole
Our span is frail, no stone can keep it whole
Age follows age; no saint can bound its toll
To chase ghostly charms by draughts is vain fool
Taste generous wine, wear fine and simple sole

14

The far depart fade faint, the near grow kin
Beyond the gate I gaze, but mounds begin
Old graves become the field; pine fuel's thin
The poplars grieve a wind that kills within
I yearn for home, yet find no way nor win

15

The span of life is short, yet bears long woe.
The day is short, the night so long and glow.
Seize joy while time allows – why wait for ease?
The fool who hoards his wealth earns later sneer.
Immortal for me, the fairy is too far to be.

16

The year grows chill; the mole cricket’s night cry
The cold wind bites; the roamer’s clothes all lie
The brocade quilt stays by the river’s goodbye
Alone each night, one dreams of vanished eye
The comrade’s gone – no more to share the tie
The husband dear – once joy – now distant shy
One longs to smile and ride the same way high
He comes but for a moment, then does fly
No morning wind’s own wings can lift one’s sigh
One strains to see, then weeps on door’s edge dry

17

In deep winter the cold comes; north winds fret
Grief lengthens night; one looks where stars are set
The full moon shines, then wanes at month’s own threat
A traveler comes from far, leaves a written debt
First tells of endless yearning, then says regret
Placed in the sleeve three years, the words not yet
A simple, humble heart – fear you might not get

18

From far a guest doth come, and sends silk tapestry fair
Though ten-thousand miles apart, his heart still lingers there
With mandarin ducks embossed, a love-wrought quilt I wear
Woven with endless longing, knots no time can tear
Like glue with lacquer – who can our bond declare

19

The bright moon glows so clear, it lights my silken weave
Sorrow denies me rest; I rise and sadly weave
Though wanderers find delight, best soon homeward leave
Alone I roam outdoors — to whom my grief believe
At turn and gaze afar; tears drench a robe’s sleeve
